I feel pretty bad getting almost 3 months after the race, but oh well. I’m going to cheat a little bit in my race reports, as 1. I probably don’t remember a lot of the details, 2. I don’t think there is a ton of valuable insight that I can offer into these two courses that can’t be found elsewhere on the interwebs, 3. a quick RR is easier to write than a not-quick RR, and lastly, 4. I like how Joe Gambles has started doing his. So, without further ado, let’s bang this bitch out.
The last two weeks of training weren’t superb. I hit a bit of a wall (mostly mentally, maybe a little bit physically), and as such ended up with some unexpected days off in the middle of my first week back from Jerseyman. That was followed by the week leading up to Quassy, and while not having any kind of drastic taper, the volume was still down, obviously. I’d say that I’m pleased with my result at Quassy – I’m still new to this game, so anytime I end up on the podium, I’m gonna be happy. Those recaps are also being written right now (Bassman, Jerseyman, Quassy — SHEESH), and will go up
shortly this week. PROMISE.

On a completely unrelated note, I share this only because playoff hockey is awesome, and seeing Sid the Kid get thrown around like a rag doll is also awesome. While the Rangers may have been bounced already, this is still a pretty cool hype video (h/t Deadspin)
It’s finally race season, and the video above accurately depicts how fucking stoked I feel about it! With two races under my belt since my last update, I suppose it’s time that I update this thing again. So, what’s the excuse this time? Well, lack of time, I suppose. [insert long paragraph here about all of my time commitments]. Regardless, I need to get back on the weekly grind of doing this. Some of the highlights of the past couple of weeks include:
- Two races, two podiums
- Winning a cash prize at one race
- Getting to race in my Wattie Ink. kit for the first time
- Throwing down some nasty swim and run PRs
- Receiving my Blueseventy Helix wetsuit just in time for my first race (see above)
- Seeing my BFFs in Worcester and seeing HCMR race well at Eastern Sprints
- Seeing my brother’s last collegiate race in Philly
- Starting GMAT prep classes (Austin here I come!)
- having a work assignment be “order a giant ass check”
- getting told I need to re-test FTP
On to the numbers…
This isn’t going to be long. I was curious what my total volume was for my time in Florida, so with the help of Garmin Connect and my own incessant blogging, I should be able to work that out. I left for Florida on Wednesday, January 9th, and arrived back in Philly on Monday, March 11th. I had a couple of sick days and travel days (that travel week down ended up being pretty much a wasted week), so lets call it 8 full weeks of training.
S: 81,400yarters, 1927′
B: 1205.8mi, 3836′
R: 298.48mi, 2499′
Total of 8,262 minutes, or 137 hours, 42 minutes. On average, that works out to 1,032.75′ a week, or 17 hours, 12′ a week.
The “average” training week looks like this (all of the numbers above divided by 8):
S: 10,175yarters, 240′
B: 150.73mi, 479′
R: 37.31mi, 312′
I have to give a big shoutout to Wellington Wahoos and Richard Garza for all the help with my swimming. Obviously I improved a lot in all three aspects, but the swim was largely due to having people to push me every morning, and Richard helping improve my stroke. I think the swim meet was one of the highlights of the entire trip, and I’m already looking forward to next winter and seeing how much faster everyone has gotten (and showing them how much faster I’ve gotten too!). Plus, I got some awesome tan lines on my legs from being able to swim outside in the sun (jammers, briefs, and speedos). Tan lines are always appreciated in January.
My run improved a ton as well, primarily because I ran a ton (by my own standards). Don’t believe me? My volume in 2 months is the equivalent to about 1/2 of my total (recorded) volume from all of last year! Obviously, the harder you work, the more success you see. I can only imagine what the coming months will have in store for me (and by months, I mean Brian/Brain).

Cycling video of Florida (God, it is so nice down there!)
This is very long overdue, and for that I apologize. I’m trying to crank this out in the 30′ window I have between having finished my run (and eating breakfast) and heading to the pool for a long swim.
Wildman came about because I was looking for an excuse to not leave Florida as early as I had planned, and Steve Houston had said he might be racing. Looked it up – cheap entry, not too far away from Disney, sold. The week leading up to the race was busy as I had to pack all of my stuff into bags and into my car, and do it in an organized manner so that when I got to Orlando I could quickly unpack everything, since I’d need the space in my car to put my bike in the back (never drive with a bike on a bike rack if it has deep dish wheels and/or a disk on!).
