I’ll try to keep this concise. Hurricane/Tropical storm Sandy has been pretty devastating up and down the east coast, and although Philly was fairly fortunate in the limited damage it took, it is pretty horrifying to see pictures of the shore and parts of NYC. My prayers go out to friends that have seen their lives be put on hold while they deal with the aftermath.
M: Recovery run in the AM, 2 hour tempo ride in the PM.
T: After a day in NJ, I came back to Philly, picked up my bike from Breakaway with a new Quarq spider on it, brought it home… and still not working. Messed around with the magnet and figured that seemed to be the problem. No work done.
W: Got my bike down to Breakaway, and got the magnet finally working… WHOOOOO! Took it out for a 50′ spin to confirm it was working, and then in the evening did 2×20′ on the bike… WITH POWER. Boom, that was awesome. Right after, did a 5mi run @ tempo. That hurt.
R: Feeling the affects of that hard run, in the form of incredibly tightness and general pain in my hip flexor/what I presume to be my ITB at the point where it runs over my hip bone. I’m most certainly not a doctor. Tried swimming, but only made it through the warmup and the first step of the main set before succumbing to the pain in my leg. In the evening, sat on my trainer for 25′ just to stretch out and see if I could loosen up the hip a little… no. That was not pleasant, and this late in the season, with no points of reference to past years of tri-training to compare to, I am being overly cautious with pain so as to not cause me to be incapable of racing Miami Man at anything less than 100% health.
F: Another day off. Lots of foam rolling and green stick rolling on my hip. Dealt with some personal stuff that was not enjoyable.
S: Determined to get out on the bike to see the quarq in action outside. Did a shortened version of my Jersey shore ride, out and back, doing 10mi warmup, 20 at tempo, turn around (with a breakfast sandwich), then 20mi at tempo, followed by 10mi cool down. I was in such a good mood after, feeling good and enjoying the ride, that I stopped by Breakaway with 2 pizzas to thank them for all their help this season.
Took the rest of the weekend off, went to a Halloween party dressed as Lance (Livestrong cycling bib, Livestrong t-shirt, 7x Livestrong bands, bike hemet, bike shoes, and most importantly: a IV bag hanging around my neck with red dye in it, and a “dopestrong” labeled trick-or-treat basket filled with syringes, filled with vodka or gin. It was well received and it was a nice chance to relax and unwind after a pretty stressful week.
