Sunday evening, came home to a wonderful surprise from my girlfriend, who had decorated my room with signs and birthday cards and balloons, and had also been kind enough to scatter birthday confetti all over my room. I am still finding that stuff one week later, and holy hell do I hate it.
She got me a cool Holy Cross cycling jersey, and a really nice Michael Kors watch. Both are dope presents, and she did a great job of finding things that I would want but would never buy for myself!
We also had some cake, and my fatness growth continued.
M: My birthday!! What did I get for my birthday? Well, let me tell you: I had the pleasure of starting a 3/6/9 run week, so I did 6 miles at slightly faster than HIM RP in the AM, and followed that up with a kick set (BLEH) in the evening. SCM workout:
300 swim, 4×150 (50 drill, 100 perfect finish and catch), 200 kick, 8×25 build, 4×100 heart rate up, but not hard on 2:00 ~80%
8×50 kick build to sprint, 4×100 pull with no buoy, 80% focus on good technique, but strong
The 8×50, 4×100 set was supposed to be done a second time, but I was running late to my birthday dinner date, so I told that kick set to go to hell and bounced.
For dinner we went to Amis, which is probably one of my favorite restaurants in the city (probably doesn’t hurt to have a friend that runs it)! Ate too much food, continued to get fatter.
T: Working in NJ, so that meant dragging my ass out of bed super early to get to the clinic, and then more birthday dinner with my parents in the evening. And more getting fatter. Workouts were relatively quick – 3mi recovery run in the AM, and then a sprint set (SCY) in the evening. The swim was probably one of my best ever, and at the end of the workout, my last 100y was a new PR – 1:08:xx off the wall, a 2″ drop! Dinner afterwards was good, and then made the trek (FORESHADOWING) back home.
W: Another 3mi recovery run, and then a 30+ mi bike ride with one of the other SNR guys, Dan. Took about 100′ on a loop circling the city at a decent clip. When I got home, I got the best news of my birthday week: my new bike was in! I wasn’t expecting it for another few weeks, so I was stoked to hear it was in so early. What is it, you ask? Why, its a Trek SC 9 Series — Large Black/matte black frame, w/ Ultegra components, Quarq, pink tape/cable housing, and basic Bontanger wheels, with pink R4 tires. Gotta rep the pink! I was so excited to hear that, I pretty much didn’t sleep that night.
R: Thursday was spent thinking about how excited I was to go see the bike, and also begging Richie @ Breakaway Bikes to squeeze me in that night for the first fitting. He eventually relented! Before that, however, I got my long run in of the week: 10mi. Slower than HIM RP, but felt very good and comfortable, and listened to some good tunes along the way (Pandora’s Hip-Hop Pre-Game 2012 station). Got an initial fitting in the evening, and then left it there to let Richie finish building it up/running the cables. Another night of tossing and turning, dreaming of my new bike.
F: A wasted day. Was supposed to be a recovery run and an endurance swim, and the run was gonna happen after the swim, but when I got to the pool, it was randomly closed. After two nights of not sleeping in excitement about my Trek, I was kind of drained. The pool not being open ended up turning Friday into a random off day, which meant I went home to play video games with a sad face on, because word from BB was that they had gotten slammed during the day and I wouldn’t be able to ride my bike on Saturday. However, Richie is the greatest person ever, and called me a little after 8p to tell me it was ready to pickup. I hustled down there and immediately wanted to do illegal things to my bike. Good Lord it is beautiful. Went home, did some tinkering, and got ready for my ride on Saturday.
S: Convinced my friend Andy to let me drag him out and back across the state of NJ to our favorite hot dog stand, Hot Diggidy Dog. We started at 9 for the 80 mile trip. I usually do 10mi out at a relaxed/warm up pace (sort of necessary due to all the traffic lights) and then go hard for the next 30 to the stand, get some dogs, and then 30 hard back before cooling down the last 10. I will do a full review of the SC when I have ridden it a few more times and adjusted the fit, so I won’t address that here. All in all, the ride went well and the hot dogs (chili cheese dogs) were fantastic! Got home, contemplated sleeping forever, and instead slowly dragged myself outside to run 5mi. Run actually ended up going very well (very fast). Plopped on the couch and watched football for the rest of the evening.
S: Normally an off day but the stupid pool closing messed that up. Went and cheered for my friend Adam who was running the Rock and Roll Half Marathon, and then went for my own 3mi recovery run. After a less than stellar recovery sensation, called it a day, and watched football for the rest of the day.
