This week was kind of a mess from a training perspective. Going into it, I knew I’d be missing a fair amount of workouts because a. at the end of the week I was leaving for OBX to spend the weekend with my “ho-cro-row-bros,” and leading up to that, I had a lot of things I needed to get done. That being said, I was determined to not let my running fall by the wayside, but ultimately that was about all that didn’t fall off.
M: Spent the Labor Day getting various things done around the house and spending time with the GF, so no workouts were accomplished until the end of the day, I got to enjoy an impromptu brick workout – 2×20′ intervals on the trainer (faster than last week), followed by a 2.5 “recovery” run. I am looking forward to getting a power meter so that my trainer rides can be more accurately compared to one another, as speed and/or HR is not nearly as consistent in measuring work done.
T: With the three day weekend over, Tuesday began a very busy few days of work, so my first workout happened at 4:30 (2.5 recovery run), and the second workout happened at 7:30p (SS ride on the trainer). I had initially planned for 75-90′ of riding, but even with episodes of South Park on, I was really struggling – as demonstrated by a very low HR for this kind of work, so I pulled the plug at 50.’
W: Clearly this week is going to be awesome from a sales perspective, but not awesome from a getting shit done perspective. Only one workout – my long run for the week – 9.5 miles, and it didn’t begin until 6p at night. The run itself was very good and I felt comfortable on it. On my medium and long distance runs I’ve been tinkering with nutrition to figure out what my stomach can handle in terms of frequency of gels, so I am hoping that I will have this sorted out within the next two weeks.
R: In NJ for the day, got home late, and then ran my mid distance run – 5 miles, at what McMillan calls a “Steady State” pace, which they way I have plugged in numbers, is faster than my HIM RP, but not uncomfortable.
F: 4:15a alarm to wake up, collect Christian, and drive 6 hours down to the Outer Banks. The drive itself was not bad at all, as we drove along the coast, and Chris surprisingly didn’t fall asleep at all and served as an excellent co-pilot. When we got down there, I got some work done, did a quick 2.5mi recovery run, and then hit the beach for the rest of the afternoon. Shenanigans ensued that night.
S: Wake up feeling awful from shenanigans, have some breakfast, lay around a bit, and then drag myself outside to go get my medium distance run done. WOOF. The goal initially had been to run it at HIM RP, but that quickly turned into “finish” and “don’t throw up.” So yea, not the most conductive training run, but at least I got it in.
The rest of the weekend consisted of lots more shenanigans, celebrating, and having an amazing time. Some pics are below.
S: Have brunch, commiserate about how much fun we had, promise to not let 3 more years go by before we’ll do it again, clean up the house, pack up, and hit the road. Made it home in under 6 hours, and arrived to find my girlfriend had decorated my room with birthday signs and the likes. More on this next week!
